Soon after the approval from the Planning Commission, Vidyanand Nanjundiah, one of the authors of the biology centre proposal, started to look for land in January 1986. He reached out to Sharat Chandra at IISc for assistance in connecting with the Karnataka Government. Chandra would, over the years, become a critical aide in smoothening cracks in the bureaucracy
