Even though TIFR had in principle got confirmation that they could get land in Bangalore, there was a parallel push to try and get a location in Pune. Note the pitch for research on communicable diseases. The Maharashtra Government, in turn, was very proactive and offered different locations. But Obaid Siddiqi, Jayant Udgaonkar and the other new faculty at NCBS were set on Bangalore given its stronger scientific foundations.
